Mystery Schools

Greek School

Join us Sunday April 22, 2012 1:00 - 3:00 PM

What do you know? How well do you know it?

Most of us know our social security number. We know that we love our children. And yet ... we hunger for something more: a different sort of knowledge. That other kind of knowledge -- in ChartresGreek, it's called gnosis, -- changes us: from the marrow of our bones to the way we smile. That sort of knowledge is what mystery schools are all about.

Mystery schools vary. Some are more controversial than others. Some are more secretive than others. But they all seek to foster transformative knowing; they all provide containers that protect the student from what she or he isn't ready for; and they all propagate paranormal activities.

In this workshop, we will look at the long history of mystery schools -- from the Eleusinian DisciplesChartres Labyrinthmysteries of 2400 hundred years ago to Zen Buddhism, the Church of Scientology, and Jean Houston's school in the 21st century. We will investigate what all of us, mystery school or no mystery school, are capable of knowing. And we will consider how awareness of the illuminations these schools provide and of the shadows besetting them could prove valuable as we attempt to meet our future; as, collectively, we set about taking our next step ---- a step that offers great promise even as it is fraught with frightening possibilities.

Rev. Ron Moor has been a student of the mysteries for over 30 years. He is a hands-on healer, teacher and ordained minister. Ron studied for eight years with noted healer, Rosalyn L. Bruyere, and for three years was lead pastor at her Healing Light Center Church and Seminary. Ron founded the Center for Wholeness in Edina, Mn., where he offers classes on healing, spiritual growth, and private healing sessions. TholosHe has served as pastor of Lake Harriet Community Church, as provider and board member of Pathways and twice was Healer in Residence at the annual International Spiritual Frontiers Fellowship Conference. He currently serves as minister at Spirit United Church in southeast Minneapolis.

Ira L. Gordon has been interested in mysteries since, as an eleven year old, he solved Arthur Conan Doyle's "Case of the Specled Band" by the second page. Now, longer in the tooth and a wee bit wiser, his fascination with the gap between appearances and realities continues -- informed by his explorations in western philosophy, Kabbalah, Scientology, Jungian psychology, astrology, and dance. Mr. Gordon is a member of the St. Paul Interfaith Network planning council, a board member of the Interfaith Bridging Initiative board of directors, and the editor of Interfaithings, an online journal.
